How to unsubscribe from Reddit emails

How to unsubscribe from Reddit emails for good: the cleanest path is the Notifications settings page on reddit.com - it groups every email category in one grid and disables them at the account level rather than just per-message. The footer Unsubscribe link inside a single email also works but only kills that specific category. Below covers all three: web settings, the in-email link, and the mobile-app equivalent for Reddit users who never log in on desktop.

Method 1: Reddit notification settings on the web

This is the only way to silence all of Reddit's email categories with one pass.

  1. Open reddit.com/settings/notifications while signed in.
  2. Reddit shows a grid of notification types across three tabs: Messages, Activity, and Updates.
  3. On each tab, find the Email column and switch off every toggle. The categories include private messages, comment replies, mentions, post replies, awards received, post engagement, and the recommendation digests.
  4. Switch to the Updates tab last and disable the weekly digest, recommendations, and "we miss you" toggles.

The change is server-side and applies instantly. The next time Reddit's cron jobs run their email batches, your address will be skipped.

Method 2: in-email Unsubscribe link

Open any Reddit email and scroll to the bottom. The Unsubscribe link is signed with a token, so it works without you re-entering your password. The catch: it only opts you out of the category that delivered that specific email. A digest unsubscribe leaves you receiving comment-reply emails, and vice versa.

Gmail and Apple Mail will also expose Reddit's List-Unsubscribe header at the top of the message - one click and you are out of that category.

Method 3: Reddit mobile app (iOS and Android)

The mobile app exposes the same notification grid:

  1. Tap your avatar in the top-left corner.
  2. Choose Settings.
  3. Tap Notification Settings.
  4. For each section (Messages, Activity, Updates), turn off everything under Email.

Web and mobile share the same backend, so a change on either side syncs to the other. You only need to do it once.

Method 4: bulk-unsubscribe via your inbox

If Reddit is just one of many notification senders cluttering your inbox, opting out one sender at a time gets old fast. ClearMyInbox scans your Gmail or Outlook inbox, lists every sender that uses the List-Unsubscribe mail header (Reddit does), and lets you opt out of as many as you want in one confirmation. Reddit, LinkedIn, Quora, Substack, and every retailer that has emailed you - one batch.

What about Reddit chat and private messages?

Chat messages and private messages have their own email toggle under the Messages tab. They are off by default for new accounts but can be on if you ever responded to a prompt asking whether you wanted email alerts when someone DMs you.

Frequently asked questions

Why is Reddit emailing me so often?

Reddit enables most notification categories by default for new accounts: weekly digest, top posts from subscribed subreddits, comment replies, private messages, and recommendation emails. Older accounts often have the "weekly digest" toggle on without realising because Reddit added the feature years after the account was created.

Can I unsubscribe from Reddit emails without logging in?

Yes - click the footer Unsubscribe link in any Reddit email. It uses a signed one-click token, so it works without re-authenticating. The downside is that it only opts you out of that single email category. To stop all categories you still need the account email-settings page.

Does turning off Reddit emails affect notifications inside the app?

No. The settings page splits Email and Push (mobile app) into separate columns. Disabling email notifications leaves push notifications and in-app inbox alerts untouched, and vice versa.

What about the Reddit weekly recap email?

The weekly recap is part of the "Updates and recommendations" category. Untick that row in the Email column. Reddit also runs occasional re-engagement emails ("you haven't visited in a while") under the same toggle.

Will I miss anything important if I disable Reddit emails?

Probably not. Password resets, account-security alerts, and verification emails are transactional and are never affected by the marketing/notification opt-out. They only fire on real account events.
