How to unsubscribe from Substack newsletters

The fastest Substack unsubscribe is the bulk action inside your account page - tick the publications you no longer want, click Unsubscribe, done. Substack is unusual among newsletter platforms because it gives you a one-stop dashboard for every publication you read, so you do not need to chase each newsletter's footer link individually. If you only want to opt out of one publication, the in-email link works too, and there is also a global Pause emails switch for when you just need a break.

Try ClearMyInbox free - bulk unsubscribe in one click, free for the first 3 scans.

Method 1: bulk unsubscribe from the Substack account page

Substack runs a centralised subscription list across every publication you read.

  1. Sign in and open substack.com/account.
  2. Click the Subscriptions tab to see every publication.
  3. Tick the checkbox next to each one you want gone.
  4. Click Unsubscribe at the top of the list to remove them all in a single confirmation.

The action is irreversible from your side - you would need to re-subscribe from the publication's page if you change your mind. Paid subscriptions stay billable until you cancel them separately under Manage subscription.

Method 2: in-email Unsubscribe link (works without an account)

Every Substack email contains a footer Unsubscribe link signed with a token, so it works even if you never created a Substack account or cannot remember your password.

  1. Open any Substack newsletter in your inbox.
  2. Scroll to the bottom. Below the publication signature you will see Unsubscribe.
  3. Click it. Substack shows a confirmation page.

Gmail, Apple Mail, and Outlook also surface Substack's List-Unsubscribe mail header as a top-of-message "Unsubscribe" button - one click and you are out.

Method 3: pause all Substack email without unsubscribing

If you want to keep your reading list intact but stop the flood for a while, Substack has a global pause:

  1. Open substack.com/account/settings/notifications.
  2. Under Email settings, toggle Pause all emails.
  3. To resume, return to the same page and toggle it back on.

Method 4: bulk-clean across all email sources

Substack is one of many newsletter platforms. If your inbox is also full of newsletters sent via beehiiv, ConvertKit, Mailchimp, or independent ESPs, those are not visible in the Substack dashboard. ClearMyInbox scans your inbox for every sender that publishes a List-Unsubscribe header and lets you opt out from many at once.

Substack notifications inside the Substack app

Substack also runs a reading app for iOS and Android. Notification preferences in the app are independent from email preferences - turning off email notifications does not silence in-app push alerts. Configure push under Settings in the app if you want both quiet.

Frequently asked questions

How do I unsubscribe from every Substack at once?

Go to substack.com/account and open the Subscriptions tab. You can select multiple subscriptions and unsubscribe in bulk. Substack also offers a master switch under Email settings that pauses all email delivery without unsubscribing from individual publications.

Does unsubscribing from a Substack also cancel a paid subscription?

No - they are separate. Email opt-out stops the newsletter delivery, but paid Substack subscriptions are managed under Manage subscription on each publication and need to be cancelled separately to stop billing.

Can I unsubscribe from a Substack without a Substack account?

Yes. Every Substack email has an Unsubscribe link in the footer that works without logging in. Substack writes that link with a signed token tied to your email address, so one click and the publication removes you from its list.

Why am I still getting Substack notifications I never signed up for?

Substack auto-suggests new publications based on what you already read, and some of those suggestions arrive as email. Turn off Recommendations under substack.com/account/settings/notifications to stop the discovery emails.

How do I pause Substack emails temporarily?

Under Email settings on your account page there is a Pause emails toggle. This stops every newsletter and notification immediately without unsubscribing you, so you can resume later without losing your reading list.
