How to unsubscribe from Meetup emails

To unsubscribe from Meetup emails, go to Settings → Email Updates - the page lives at meetup.com/account/comm/ - and understand one thing before you start: Meetup mail runs on two layers. Account-level toggles at the top govern messages, comment replies, and recommendations, while every group you have ever joined keeps its own email settings underneath. That split is why one busy group can flood you with announcements while the rest stay quiet, and it is also your best tool: you can mute a single group entirely without leaving it. Account, security, privacy, policy, and payment emails cannot be switched off.

Method 1: the account-level Email Updates toggles

1. Sign in at meetup.com and click your profile picture.
2. Choose Settings, then Email Updates - or open meetup.com/account/comm/ directly.
3. Work through the account-wide toggles at the top: new messages, replies to my comments, and the recommendation-style updates that suggest groups and events near you.
4. Flip off anything you do not want; changes apply immediately.

The recommendation toggles are the ones behind "groups you might like" mail - they are pure marketing and safe to kill. The messages toggle is worth keeping if organizers ever contact you directly.

Method 2: silence one group without leaving it

1. On the same Email Updates page, scroll below the main toggles to the list of your groups.
2. Click Edit next to the noisy group.
3. Turn off its individual email types: new event announcements, changes to event time or location, new comments & chat messages, announcements to members, event rating requests, and the photo upload and tagging alerts.
4. Consider leaving event updates from organizers on if you actually attend - that is the stream that tells you an event you RSVPed to moved or was cancelled.

This per-group layer is what most people miss. You stay a member, you still see everything on the site, and the group loses the ability to email you about every new hiking date.

Method 3: the unsubscribe link in the email footer

Meetup emails include a footer Unsubscribe link, and Gmail and Apple Mail add their one-click button from the List-Unsubscribe header. It disables the email type that sent the message, which makes it a decent spot fix - but because Meetup mail is split across two layers and every group, the Email Updates page is the only place you can see the whole picture at once. Note that some Meetup mail carries no unsubscribe link at all: that is the account and policy mail Meetup classifies as essential.

When Meetup emails do not stop

An email type sends only when the account-level toggle and the group-level toggle are both on - so a stream you "turned off" in one place may still be live because you toggled the other layer, or a newly joined group arrived with everything defaulted on.
