How to unsubscribe from Target emails
Target runs three marketing email streams side by side, and the footer unsubscribe only clears the one that email came from. General marketing arrives from targetnews@em.target.com, Circle offer digests and survey invitations come from their own senders, and texts are a fourth channel again with a different opt-out entirely. Clear them in the right order and nothing comes back; clear one and it looks like the unsubscribe failed. Your Circle offers survive all of it - they stay attached to your account in the app whatever you do to the email.
Try ClearMyInbox free - bulk unsubscribe in one click, free to start.
Method 1: the footer unsubscribe link
- Open a recent promotional email from Target - but know that this link only clears the one list that email came from, and Target runs three.
- Scroll to the very bottom, click Unsubscribe, then confirm on the second screen.
- Repeat for every Target sender address you can find. General marketing, Circle offer digests and survey invitations are separate lists with separate links.
Gmail and Apple Mail usually show a one-click Unsubscribe button at the top of Target messages too, which does the same job without the form.
Method 2: email preferences in your Target account
- Sign in at target.com and open your account menu.
- Go to your account settings and find the Email preferences section. Target's help center article "How do I unsubscribe or opt out of Target marketing?" walks through the same path.
- Switch off the promotional categories. In the Target app the equivalent lives under your Circle account settings.
Target also takes marketing opt-out requests through Guest Services if you no longer have an account, and allows up to 10 business days for changes to settle.
The Target Circle wrinkle
Unsubscribing from email does not delete your Target Circle account, and it does not remove Circle offers - those still show in the app and at checkout, which most people want. What stops is the email digest about them. If you subscribed to Target Circle 360, membership emails about billing and benefits are service mail tied to the paid subscription and continue until you cancel it, the same pattern Walmart runs with Walmart+.
Verify it actually stopped
Between the 10 business day processing window and the separate Circle and survey streams, it is easy to think you are done when one list is still live. ClearMyInbox closes the loop: about 30 days after your opt-out it re-checks the sender and labels it confirmed stopped or flags it as still emailing. If a stream survives, filter em.target.com promos at the mailbox level - keep the filter off the main target.com domain so shipping notices still land.
What stays on: order and pickup emails
Order confirmations, shipping updates, "your order is ready for pickup" notices, and return receipts are transactional and keep coming after any marketing opt-out. They only fire when you buy, return, or pick something up. Texts are separate as well - reply STOP to any Target marketing SMS.
The rest of the retail flood
Target promos rarely travel alone. Costco runs its own steady member-deal stream, and the whole category cleanup - every store at once instead of one footer form at a time - is covered in our guide to stopping shopping emails.
Frequently asked questions
Why am I still getting Target emails after unsubscribing?▾
The footer link only removes you from the list that sent that specific email, and Target runs several - general marketing from targetnews at em.target.com, Target Circle offer digests, and survey invitations. Unsubscribe from each sender you see, then give it up to 10 business days to fully process.
Will unsubscribing stop Target Circle offers?▾
Email digests about Circle offers stop when you opt out of marketing, but the offers themselves stay attached to your Circle account and still appear in the Target app. If you also want app pings gone, turn off promotional push notifications in the app settings.
Will I still get order and shipping emails from Target?▾
Yes. Order confirmations, shipping updates, pickup-ready and delivery notices, and return receipts are transactional. They keep arriving after any marketing opt-out and only fire when you actually buy or return something.
How do I stop Target text messages?▾
Reply STOP to any Target marketing text. SMS runs as its own channel, so unsubscribing from email does not touch texts, and offer alerts you enabled in the Target app are controlled separately under the app notification settings.
Do I need to leave Target Circle to stop the emails?▾
No. Target Circle membership and its earnings survive an email opt-out. Turning off marketing email in your account settings stops the promotional stream while your Circle account, saved payment cards, and order history stay intact.
