Privacy Policy - Marketing Box Guard

Marketing Box Guard ("the extension") is a browser extension published by ClearMyInbox. This policy explains what the extension does and does not do with your data. The short version: by default it collects and transmits nothing, and the one optional feature that sends anything is off until you turn it on - and even then it sends only a website's domain name, never anything about you.

What the extension does

The extension runs a script on web pages you visit to find pre-checked marketing and newsletter opt-in checkboxes and untick them. All of this happens locally in your browser, on your device.

Data we collect by default

None. Out of the box the extension does not collect, store off-device, or transmit any personal information, browsing history, page content, form data, or analytics. There is no tracking and no third-party service.

Optional anonymized reports (off by default)

The settings page has a "Contribute anonymized reports" switch. It is off by default, and nothing is ever sent unless you turn it on. If you enable it, then whenever the extension finds a pre-checked marketing box, it sends ClearMyInbox's server a single piece of information: the site's registrable domain name (for example example.com). Specifically:

  • What is sent: the domain only. Never the full web address, page path, query string, page content, form data, or anything you typed.
  • What is not attached: no account, no user ID, no cookie, no device identifier. Reports cannot be linked to you or to your other reports.
  • Why: to build aggregate statistics and public reporting about websites that pre-tick marketing consent boxes (a practice that does not meet the GDPR consent standard).
  • How often: each domain is reported at most once every 180 days from your browser.
  • Server handling: the server stores the domain and a count. It does not store your IP address. Standard rate limiting is applied to requests in transit, as with any web service.
  • Withdrawing: turn the switch off at any time; from that moment nothing further is sent.

Data stored on your device

The extension uses your browser's local storage only to remember:

  • whether protection is on or off,
  • a list of sites you chose to disable it on, and
  • a simple counter of how many boxes it has unticked.

This data never leaves your browser and is removed if you uninstall the extension.

Permissions

  • storage - to save the settings listed above on your device.
  • activeTab - so the toolbar popup can show the current site's name for the per-site on/off toggle. It is used only when you open the popup.
  • Host access (all sites) - so the extension can find and untick marketing boxes on the signup and checkout forms you visit. It reads only checkbox labels to classify them; it does not read or send page content.
  • api.clearmyinbox.ai - used only to submit the optional anonymized domain reports described above. No request is made to it unless you enable that setting.

Changes

If this policy changes, the updated version will be published with the extension listing and the date above will change.
