How do I get the raw source of an email?
- Gmail (web): open the email, click the three-dot menu in the top right, choose Show original, then Copy to clipboard and paste it above.
- Outlook (web): open the email, click the three-dot menu, choose View then View message source, and copy everything.
- Apple Mail: open the email, then View, Message, Raw Source. Copy the whole window.
- Thunderbird: open the email and press Ctrl+U (Cmd+U on Mac).
- Most desktop clients can also drag an email out as a .eml file - drop it straight onto the box above.
What a tracking pixel tells the sender
A tracking pixel is a 1x1 invisible image with a unique token in its URL. The moment your mail app loads it, the sender's tracking platform records that YOU opened THAT email - typically with a timestamp, your rough location derived from your IP address, and the device you used. Marketing platforms aggregate this into open rates, send-time optimisation, and "engaged recipient" profiles.
Click tracking goes further: every link in the email is rewritten to pass through the platform's redirect domain first, so each click is logged before you reach the real destination. Between the two, a sender knows whether you opened, when, where, and what you clicked.
How to block email tracking
- Turn off automatic image loading in your mail client - pixels cannot fire if images never load.
- Use a proxying provider. Apple Mail Privacy Protection preloads images through Apple servers, and Gmail proxies images too, which hides your IP and blurs open timing (senders still get a proxied open signal).

Because the email is parsed rather than displayed, the pixels never actually fire.

How do I stop email tracking?
Turn off automatic image loading in your mail settings, use a client or provider that proxies images (Apple Mail Privacy Protection and Gmail image proxying both blunt tracking), and unsubscribe from senders you no longer read - a sender you have left cannot track you.
