How to unsubscribe from Facebook emails
The fastest Facebook unsubscribe is the email frequency setting: open facebook.com/settings?tab=notifications, click Email, and switch to Only emails about your account, security and privacy. That one toggle silences tags, comments, friend requests, group activity, and Marketplace alerts in one shot. If you only want to silence specific categories (say, group emails but not friend requests), you can do that per-category instead. Below covers both paths and the mobile-app equivalent.
Try ClearMyInbox free - bulk unsubscribe in one click, free for the first 3 scans.
Method 1: set Facebook email frequency to lowest
This is the nuclear option - one toggle that kills almost everything.
- Open facebook.com/settings?tab=notifications.
- In the left list of notification channels, click Email.
- Set What you will receive to Only emails about your account, security and privacy.
- Save.
After this change you will only receive critical security alerts: login from new device, password change, recovery code requests. Tags, comments, group activity, Marketplace messages, Page updates, and event invites all go quiet.
Method 2: per-category control
For a more nuanced setup - say, you want emails when somebody tags you but not for group activity - use the category list instead of the frequency control.
- Open the same notifications page.
- Click through each category: Comments, Tags, Reminders, Activity about you, Birthdays, Friend requests, Groups, Pages you manage, Marketplace, Live videos, Events.
- For each, switch the Email toggle off.
Method 3: Facebook app on iOS or Android
- Open the Facebook app.
- Tap your profile photo or the menu (three lines).
- Tap Settings & privacy → Settings.
- Scroll to Notifications.
- Tap Email and apply the same low-frequency setting or category-level toggles.
Method 4: bulk-opt-out across every social platform
Facebook is just one of several social platforms that send routine engagement email. ClearMyInbox scans your inbox for every social-platform sender and lets you opt out of dozens in one batch.
These each have separate email preferences even though they share a parent company. Instagram: profile → Settings → Notifications. WhatsApp does not email you under normal use. Messenger inherits Facebook's email settings so it should be silenced once you finish the Facebook flow above.
Frequently asked questions
Where exactly is the Facebook email frequency setting? ▾
On the web, open facebook.com/settings?tab=notifications, then click Email in the channel list. The page shows What you will receive with options for All notifications, Important notifications, or Only emails about your account, security and privacy.
How do I stop Facebook tag notification emails? ▾
In notification settings, open the Tags category and switch off the Email channel. You can keep push or in-app notifications while killing the emails.
Why does Facebook still email me after I disabled notifications? ▾
A few categories - critical account security alerts, password changes, and "your account was accessed from a new device" - are not opt-out-able. If you reset to "Only emails about your account, security and privacy" you should only see those rare alerts and nothing else.
Can I unsubscribe without logging into Facebook? ▾
Yes - every Facebook email has a footer Unsubscribe link tied to that specific notification category. Useful if you no longer have account access.
Does this stop Instagram and Messenger emails too? ▾
No. Instagram and Messenger have their own email settings. Update each app separately. Instagram: tap profile, then Settings, then Notifications. Messenger settings sync with Facebook.
